Green Screens 2022
This session will focus on the end of the world, and the end of the species, examining how these two concepts preoccupy not only much of science fiction but, unfortunately, increasingly large swathes of science itself. We will look at the philosophical weight of contemplating our own annihilation and the complexities and consequences of such an undertaking.
La Jetée (1962) directed by Chris Marker, 28 Mins
Time travel, still images, a past, present and future and the aftermath of World War III. The tale of a man, a slave, sent back and forth, in and out of time, to find a solution to the world’s fate. To replenish its decreasing stocks of food, medicine and energies, and in doing so, resulting in a perpetual memory of a lone female, life, death and past events that are recreated on an airport’s viewing pier.
For those that wish to participate, the screening will be followed by a group discussion of the film and assigned reading.
