Slow AI
Research group Algorithmic Cultures
Slow AI focuses on developing methodologies for reimagining AI and algorithmic systems. It is a project initiated by Mariana Fernández Mora and a collaboration between the Visual Methodologies Collective (HvA) and the Sandberg Institute (GRA). This project is kindly funded by CoECI. The program includes monthly public research sessions where an invited artist, duo or collective, explore slow notions related to technology.
Journalism Hub
The in-house journalism hub is led by Gabrielle Kennedy and will catalyze, document, and disseminate discussion on topics and issues defined from the work of students and alumni.

Research Café is an informal seminar series where you can learn more about various research methodologies from different senior researchers at Rietveld Sandberg Research. These seminars are open to all students, staff, tutors, and alumni of Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Sandberg Instituut. Preparation is not necessary.
Green Screens (2021-2024)
Research group Critical Inquiry

Green Screens explores how ecological concepts—from climate change to extraterrestrial life—are dealt with in cinema, and what it means to engage with these ideas in this format. Green Screens’ programming primarily focuses on Science Fiction and seeks to understand how the genre has been used to—directly and indirectly—address ideas and anxieties around ecology thinking. It is through these twin lenses of Cinema and SF that we watch the material and discuss its political and cultural implications. Open to students, staff, graduates and friends.
TARR (2021-2023)
The research program Third Cycle in Artistic Research at the Rietveld (TARR), ran from 2021 to 2023 and was led by senior researcher Paula Albuquerque. It focused on methodical discussions about artistic research and learning skills for third cycle research.
Contemporary Commoning (2020-2022)
Contemporary Commoning is a two year research project investigating the many ways in which ‘commoning’ can contribute to new forms of public space, in the physical as well as the digital realm, and new spaces for public action. This research takes the potential contribution of design and art in these processes of ‘commoning’ as the main point of departure.

The research is a collaboration between the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Sandberg Institute, Waag: Technology and Society, University of Amsterdam’s Center for Urban Studies, Casco Art Institute and Studio René Boer. The research project is grounded in Amsterdam’s Zeeburgereiland, an island on the city’s eastern fringes currently being developed, and will result in a toolkit of ‘recipes for the commons’.

This project is made possible through the support of NWO, BPD and Nautilus.

Henrick de Keyserplein
Research group Art & Spatial Praxis
The Rietveld Sandberg research group Art & Spatial Praxis, SIS (Studio for Immediate Spaces) Master’s programme at the Sandberg Instituut and the Municipality of Amsterdam collaborated in the development of plan area Henrick de Keijserplein in Amsterdam Stadsdeel Zuid.
Art & Public Space (2003-2022)
As the main point in the Netherlands, LAPS, Research Institute for Art and Public Space led by Jeroen Boomgaard from 2003 to 2022, contributed to the development, disclosure and presentation of knowledge on art and public space. The research institute carried out research, on the one hand on fundamental questions and basic principles in regard to art, design and the public domain, and on the other hand on practical problems in relation to specific situations. LAPS, Research Institute for Art and Public Space worked for commissioners that vary from public authorities to organizations and freelancers. The research institute also initiated its own research and disperses the results through symposia, lectures, debates, publications and exhibitions.
