Algorithmic Cultures – Slow AIEvery day, we consume hundreds of images. We use them, ignore them, absorb, object and devour them. They are the digital material that shapes our online worlds, seducing us into the pull of our devices.
Materiality – How Material Comes to Matter
Art & Spatial Praxis – Climate Imaginaries at SeaStarting at the Goethe Instituut, Herengracht 470 in Amsterdam. Followed by a conversation and wetness walk to the IJ river bank. RSVP via www.goethe.de
As the climate crisis escalates further, the notion of ‘wetness’ is becoming an increasingly urgent issue around the world. Amsterdam and its surroundings are situated on the muddy lands along the North Sea, which are to a large extent reclaimed from all kinds of bodies of water while also often lying below sea level. At the same time, this part of the world has in recent years been undergoing various periods of extreme drought, posing a wide range of (spatial) challenges across the region. Amsterdam and its almost entirely man-made surroundings not only provide an insightful landscape to discuss wetness, but its past, present and future can also not be fully understood without some basic knowledge around these issues.
Materiality – How Material Comes to MatterThis workshop brings together the students of the TXT bachelor department, the Garden Department and other living organisms in a collective site of material research to engage with material practices weaving together human and other-than-human knowledges.
Due to digitalisation and polarisation, we are increasingly listening less to each other. How do we reconnect meaningfully? And how can technology contribute to a society focused on relationships rather than transactions? Society 5.0 Festival will explore these questions on 9 & 10 October in Amsterdam. The festival is organised by the Centre of Expertise Creative Innovation (CoE CI), a collaboration between the Rietveld Academie, the Amsterdam School of the Arts, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, and InHolland University of Applied Sciences. There is a limited amount of free tickets for employees and students of these institutions.

Critical Inquiry – Research CaféThis year's research seminar with Tom Vandeputte returns to the question how critique may be understood today. We consider the history of the concept, tracing its key transformations and reinterpretations over the course of the twentieth century, and discuss what it might mean to think of critique as a ‘theoretical practice’. Special attention will be paid to the negativity at stake in critical inquiry, as well as the question how we might understand its inventive and imaginative elements.
The Philosophy Seminars of the spring-summer semester will focus on George Bataille’s writings on animals and animality.
TARR – Research CaféWhat follows a Master of Fine Arts when one desires further development in one’s education as artist? How to become aware of what a potential PhD (or equivalent) in the Arts mail entail, and for whom may this represent a suitable trajectory? The session consists of a short introduction to the different possibilities to choose from when pursuing a Third cycle in education in the Arts in the Netherlands (including insights into prospective collaborations with institutions abroad). This entails highlighting the differences between the formal degrees entitled Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Professional Doctorate (PD) and the Rietveld’s own Creator Doctus (CrD).
This three-part program aims to explore anxieties surrounding human-animal relations, as depicted in 20th-century genre-fiction movies. We will watch and discuss three films together, each selected to represent specific anxieties expressed through cinema, either directly or metaphorically. Each session is open to all students, staff, graduates and friends of Sandberg and Rietveld.

Research CaféIn this seminar we will discuss the question of how collective an artistic practice is, and how much of the artistic process is a shared conversation with other makers both human and beyond-human. We will discuss a number of collaborative artistic practices which challenge the notion of authorship while simultaneously producing distinct artistic voices. We will also engage in a collective experiment together.
To kick off the year 2024, we are happy to invite you to join us for the book launch of 'The City as Anthology: Movements at the Margins of Public Space' by Mariken Overdijk on 13 January at 3pm, at Zone2Source, Amstelpark, Glass Pavilion.
Art & Spatial Praxis – Research CaféHow to move from a general topic of interest to a topic of inquiry? And how to narrow your topic of inquiry to a research question? Research questions are the questions you answer in or through your work. These questions give structure to your work. The questions you ask are related to the research you do and the work you want to create. During this seminar, you aim to move from a general topic of interest to a more (or less) specified and framed research question that will help you structure your thinking, doing, making and researching.
Algorithmic Cultures – Research CaféWe will explore the theoretical foundations of AI, delving into the intricate process of training AI models and understanding their underlying mechanisms. Through a hands-on approach, attendees will learn to craft prompts that resonate with AI applications, both text and image based, fostering a dialogue that can yield insightful text and evocative imagery as well as aid research practices. The session will have a generative approach, focusing on free to use applications. The goal is to use these tools as starting points for art making, design and research. Please bring your laptop as well as a notebook and pen.

Algorithmic CulturesWeek on Algorithmic Cultures is an introduction to the research group on Algorithmic Cultures. Algorithmic cultures refer to the dynamic and reciprocal relationship between algorithms and both human and non-human societies. We examine not only how algorithms are informed by and embedded within cultural norms, values, institutions, and behaviors but also how they, in turn, actively shape these dimensions. As algorithmic processes increasingly blur the boundaries of everyday life, they significantly influence the ways in which individuals and communities interact, engage with, and transform knowledge and culture. We share an interest in researching how algorithmic mediation can redefine power dynamics, ethical considerations, and the construction of reality itself.

This open studio moment will offer a glimpse into their research interests, methodologies and approaches to work in the context of their practice and their shared path at Sandberg Instituut".
Art & Spatial PraxisIn research publications, more often than not media production—be it audiovisual or any other form of artistic practice that isn’t writing—is still seen as somehow inferior; mere support material. A figure that accompanies the text, the main act, and that would fail to be considered as a form of research itself. Producing, distributing and consuming media is not about illustrating previously existing research or knowledge, but about doing things: working with media is actively doing research. In this sense, we should try and facilitate both tools and means for practitioners of this practice-based research, currently not or at least underrepresented in the publishing industries. To put it concisely: what is the role of publishing within practice-based research?

Algorithmic CulturesKnowledge is a space, an abstract space where data points are collected, they form clusters of possible relations. AI, ML or NN have a way of finding connections within a dataset. It finds a solution or answers from a dataset. Data is an abstract term, but it can be as tangible as we like it to be.

In this round table discussion, we will explore how the human rating system creates a numeric value reflected in number of likes, number of YouTube reproductions, social media metrics and the way that platforms and apps have created a system of hierarchies and strata to measure life’s worth. We will discuss how through this human ratings system the logic of the algorithm intervenes in human subjectivity expanding the project of valuation of human life that has been instrumental to the capitalist administration of life itself.

A movement workshop.
Within the scope of her research, Nina Glockner (Ceramics Department Rietveld) explores how materiality is altered by subjective awareness and how somatic and performative knowledge can be applied to new methodologies and tools within contemporary art/ design production, education, and beyond: to which degree can a change of the subject's intention, attention, and perceptiveness lead to a change of artistic process, action, and outcome? During the Practice-bases sessions Glockner will guide the group through a number of exercises that she has developed.
Ghosts in the Family is a writing workshop co-hosted by Toni Brell and Amy Suo Wu (Design Sandberg). Stories play a role in affecting our own identities, kinships, and the communities and societies we're embedded within. This workshop will be centred around the role of storytelling and fiction from queer, feminist and diaspora perspectives alongside each other. Toni will be exploring ways to challenge and disrupt hegemonic narratives as potential gestures to create alternative realities, while Amy will approach fiction and storytelling as tools for immersion and empathy in the mending of intergenerational and diasporic divides. A variety of collective and individual writing methods will be practiced to conjure up and exorcise ghosts in the family. The workshop will take place at Sandberg Instituut with max. 10 participants. Students can sign up via the link attached.
How can we design starting from the notion of harvesting energy? Solar energy now is still perceived as a technology, an add-on that comes last when designing building or spaces. What if solar energy would be a necessity? An essential part of things around us, things that we would consider to be broken when they would not generate their own energy? We need to start looking at scenario’s in a distant future instead of looking at efficiency and cost reduction, so it can become part of our culture. Will this change our perception on how we would like to live with solar? What would your take on solar be if this could become part of your lifestyle, identity even? During the lecture, Marjan van Aubel will show some of her examples of previous works and talks about her research at Studio for Immediate Spaces.
The public guest lecture by Federico Campagna is part of a 5-day workshop for the students of the Sandberg Dirty Art Department hosted by Nicola Baratto & Yiannis Mouravas. In the online zoom lecture, Campagna will give an introduction to his work and talk about his forthcoming book 'Prophetic Culture: Recreation for Adolescents (2021).
During his talk ‘Black Revelry: Feeling with The Sugar Shack’ Derrais Carter (Fine Arts Sandberg) will discuss the method of his ongoing, multi-modal project titled Black Revelry. He’ll introduce how theories of Black social life, intimacy, radio, art, and desire converge in his collaborations honoring Ernie Barnes’ painting The Sugar Shack.
During his lecture ‘Ship space against civic space’ Oskar Johanson (Architectural design Rietveld) will talk about his ongoing research and discuss his questions around maritime vessels as historically entangled cities and question what political, juridical and architectural frictions exist between ship space and civic space today.

Please join us for the online launch of the new IN/Search RE/Search publication with a live stream panel that will discuss how collaboration between the professions of art, design, journalism and academia can steer research.
Fellows 19/20The research fellowships are a Sandberg/Rietveld initiative to pursue different knowledge practices involving topics such as Artificial Intelligence, The City and New Materials. From both Rietveld and Sandberg a few candidates are selected to research one of the topics and share their project with the students and the community. This fellowship symposium is an ONLINE EVENT open to all Rietveld and Sandberg students: live.sandberg.nl.
