Rietveld and Sandberg students are invited to join our workshop Material Temporalities on 6 November. This workshop offers a rare opportunity to visit and work in the Atelier Building of the Rijksmuseum. During the first part of the workshop you will receive an in-depth introduction to the workshops and laboratories at NICAS, exploring different temporalities of art-making through the lens of material-based research. In the second part of the workshop students will be invited to engage in exercises and discussion evolving from their own material experimentations through the lens of preservation and restoration.
Oftentimes people experience artworks as finished products, even though they are invariably preceded by long and arduous processes of conception and development. Unless the visibility of that process is an explicit part of the work, we typically see very little of this phase. This workshop focusses how we can approach artworks, sometimes even centuries after their creation as a source for understanding their own creation process. How can we unravel materials and techniques used in making them? And does this affect the meaning of the artwork in the present? For this workshop student's are invited to bring a piece material, it could be something you made or something you found, that you find worth preserving.

NICAS
The Netherlands Institute for Conservation+Art+Science+ (NICAS) brings together researchers from the disciplines of conservation, art history, physical science and computer science. NICAS want to develop the connections between these disciplines in the form of a cohesive research programme, with a focus on the origin of the object and the life of the object through time. The ultimate goal is a more complete understanding, an enriched presentation and optimal preservation of cultural heritage.
Materiality Research Group
This workshop is part of a series of workshops conocted by the Materiality Research Group (Anja Groten and Márk Redele), and kindly funded by CoECI. The Materiality Research Group revisits the role of workshops and their pedagogies, asking how material comes to matter in the face of contemporary social and ecological challenges.
