Tour of conservation studios followed by a guided conversation and collective mapping exercise at NICAS and the Atelier Building of the Rijksmuseum
This workshop offers students a rare opportunity to visit and work in the Atelier Building of the Rijksmuseum. You will receive an in-depth introduction to the workshops and laboratories at NICAS (The Netherlands Institute for Conservation+Art+Science+), exploring different temporalities of art-making through the lens of material-based research. The workshop invites participants to take part in an in-depth exploration of material preservation and restoration techniques of NICAS.
The visit is followed by guided conversation and collective mapping exercise that attempts shifting our gaze from the moment of the now to the wider temporal dimension of conception, development and multiple phases of becoming what we perceive today of an artwork. We focus on the long and arduous processes that precede the perception of an artwork as a finished product. How can we unravel materials and techniques used in artworks? And does this affect the meaning of the artwork in the present? For this workshop students are asked to bring a work or representation of a work of their own.

NICAS
The Netherlands Institute for Conservation+Art+Science+ (NICAS) brings together researchers from the disciplines of conservation, art history, physical science and computer science. We want to develop the connections between these disciplines in the form of a cohesive research programme, with a focus on the origin of the object and the life of the object through time. The ultimate goal is a more complete understanding, an enriched presentation and optimal preservation of cultural heritage.
Materiality Research Group
The Materiality Research Group, part of Rietveld Sandberg Research, revisits the role of workshops in art and design education, asking how material comes to matter in the face of contemporary social and ecological challenges.
