Algorithmic CulturesThe Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Rietveld Sandberg Research are pleased to announce the appointment of Flavia Dzodan as Professor (Lector) of Algorithmic Cultures. Dzodan’s work marks a significant contribution to the GRA’s mission of fostering a research culture that embraces expansive, interdisciplinary, and non-traditional approaches, which reflect the complex and critical issues of our time. Her appointment underscores the GRA’s commitment to recognizing and supporting research practices that transcend conventional academic boundaries, weaving together theoretical exploration and artistic expression.

Algorithmic CulturesDuring the Week on Algorithmic Cultures December 5th - 7th 2023 senior researcher Flavia Dzodan put together a three-day programme at Sandberg Instituut. The programme was an introduction to the research group on Algorithmic Cultures led by Flavia Dzodan, which was previously known as the A.I. research cell.

TARROn the 13th of October 2023, the participating researchers of the research group Third cycle in Artistic Research at the Rietveld (TARR) hosted a public presentation and an exhibition at the Rietveld Gym. The presentation and exhibition was a communal moment for the group of researchers who worked together in the space for three days and experienced and learned more about each other’s work. The talks with the invited respondents, Alice Twemlow and Astrid Korporaal, were very productive and the contact with the public very stimulating.

Critical InquiryRietveld Sandberg Research is offering a small stipend to support alumni as well as tutors and researchers affiliated with the Sandberg Instituut and Rietveld Academie in the preparation of a research proposal for a practice-oriented PhD or other type of doctoral degree at another university or academy. As in previous years, the stipends is meant to facilitate the preparation of research proposals concerned with ecological crisis, environmental justice and planetary futures.

Art & Spatial PraxisIn research publications, more often than not media production—be it audiovisual or any other form of artistic practice that isn’t writing—is still seen as somehow inferior; mere support material. A figure that accompanies the text, the main act, and that would fail to be considered as a form of research itself. Producing, distributing and consuming media is not about illustrating previously existing research or knowledge, but about doing things: working with media is actively doing research. In this sense, we should try and facilitate both tools and means for practitioners of this practice-based research, currently not or at least underrepresented in the publishing industries. To put it concisely: what is the role of publishing within practice-based research?

Art & Spatial PraxisApply for the international exchange project, WASALIWA, a collaboration of Framer Framed, the Sandberg Instituut and the Oceania Arts Centre in Fiji. We are looking for Amsterdam based artists to explore the ecological history and future of the Pacific Islands through a series of workshops 5, 6, 7, and 8 June 2023. Algorithmic CulturesWe are looking for 4 members who are interested in joining the kenniskring/ research group on a regular basis; whose work is already engaged with the topics of ‘AI and algorithms’ and the different perspectives and disciplines that relate to these topics. As a study group member, you would be committed to attending a minimum of 4 sessions throughout the year.
