Lila Bullen Smith

Research group Art & Spatial Praxis

Lila Bullen-Smith is an artist from South Africa/Aotearoa currently based in Amsterdam. Her research is concerned with accessing, sharing, and understanding local memory and history through an array of neglected senses, particularly ones that aren’t so easily archived or documented, such as taste and smell. These phenomenological, sense-based investigations into site-specific histories trace the opaque circulation of capital, labour and ecologies in our landscape. Her practice ranges in materiality, working across text, cookery, olfaction, metallurgy, sculpture, and installation.

She works primarily in collective formats and has exhibited in Sonic Acts Biennale, W139, Kunst Centrum de Ploeg, Into the Great Wide Open, NDSM-Werf, and Rib Rotterdam, amongst others.
