Dorothy Blokland

Dorothy Blokland graduated from the Academy of Theater in Tilburg in 2014. Her cultural background as a born and raised Surinamese is of great importance to her. In 2015 she adapted the monologue The queen of Paramaribo, there is no such thing as a fallen woman after the book by the Surinamese writer Clark Accord.

Blokland continues to develop new texts based on personal stories in her work. Since 2017, she has regularly performed with Yahmani Blackman. Together, they formed the theatre duo Blakman&Blokland, which appeared in We Are Going to Talk About Her and Anansi and the New World. Blokland has been active as a spoken word artist and teacher at Poetry Circle since 2014. Inspired by her own life, she tells stories about a proud black woman who tries to make her way in a harsh world. Blokland completed the Master Creative Producer at the Das Graduate School - Academy of Theater and Dance in 2023. With her organisation Building Blok she supports young creative people with business and artistic advice. Blokland is also the artistic director of her Radical stories foundation. The foundation aims to connect people through stories. They strive to provide insights that may be overlooked to promote open and inclusive dialogue.
