Mikki Stelder

Mikki Stelder is an antidisciplinary researcher, writer and learner fascinated by anything that has to do with oceans and water; anti-capitalist, anti-colonial and anti-racist queer, trans, feminist thought and praxis; and scholarly practices that intersect with art, poetics and movements for social justice.

They is currently an Assistant Professor of Global Arts and Politics at the University of Amsterdam. Previously, they was a European Commission Marie Skłodowska Curie recipient at the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis and University of British Columbia. Here they worked on her research project Maritime Imagination: A Cultural Oceanography of Dutch Imperialism and its Aftermaths. They was a lecturer in Gender and Postcolonial Studies at Utrecht University and teach courses in Cultural Studies, Social Justice, Memory and Heritage Studies, and Gender and Postcolonial Studies. Alongside them academic work, they enjoys curating public programs and collaborating with artists, such as at the Oceans as Archives series (co-organized with Renisa Mawani and Kristie Flannery).

Art & Spatial Praxis – The Climate Imaginaries at Sea festival took place from 19 April to 25 April 2024 in Amsterdam. An event for artistic and participatory research practices that speculate on possible futures in and around water. It was an exciting week with two exhibitions, an open studio day programme, the launch of the second issue of the Making Waves zine, a closing concert and more.
